Jun 6
1:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Jane Austen at the Theatre
Enjoy an afternoon exploring "Jane Austen at the Theatre" with the Metro New York Region. The meeting will begin with a talk by Claudia Martin of Binghamton University on "'A Young Lady of Spirit Happened to Be at the Playhouse': How Austen's Heroines Evolved from the Theatrics of the 18th-Century Coquette."
The second presentation will be a panel discussion moderated by Co-RC Sarah Rose Kearns and featuring special guests Grace Abele, Jessie Field, and James Martinez Salem, all of whom have written theatrical pieces inspired by Austen's iconic character Charlotte Lucas. Abele is the author of Charlotte Collins, a new play that imagines the further adventures of Charlotte and her husband after the close of Pride and Prejudice. Field and Martinez Salem are the creative team behind Charlotte Lucas is 27 and Not Dead, a new pop-rock musical comedy in which "unromantic" Charlotte discovers romance with her best friend's sister. During this discussion, brief excerpts from both pieces will be performed.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m. with the program starting at 2 p.m. Stay after the program for conversation, coffee, tea, and fruit and sweets.
The event is open to the public.
