Northern California Region: Regency Conduct Literature (HYBRID)

Regency Conduct Literature

Join the Northern California Region at Stanford University or via Zoom for a special presentation by Rebecca J. Adams, doctoral candidate in English Literature, examining conduct literature.

Conduct literature was a guide for basic etiquette, like table manners and proper speech, but also on larger matters of religion and intellectual life. By Austen's time, "conduct" included one’s character, and the primary concern of such works was virtue and propriety. Janeites may be familiar with conduct literature like Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women, notably referenced in Pride and Prejudice, but this talk will expand our understanding of the genre, its history, and its presence in Austen's life and work.
