A Stay at Chawton House

Join the San Diego Region for a presentation by Jeanne Talbot on Chawton House in Hampshire, England—the 16th century Elizabethan manor formerly owned by Jane Austen's wealthy brother Edward Knight. Through the largesse of Sandy Lerner, a U.S. tech executive, Chawton House was beautifully renovated to its former glory, along with its extensive grounds, and with the addition of an extensive Early Women Writers collection and research library. In 2024, a renovated three-bedroom furnished apartment in Chawton House became available for the first time for vacation rentals, and Talbot and two JASNA friends stayed at Chawton House for nine days. 

Talbot will share her experiences, including the many day trips throughout the area she enjoyed. Her talk will be accompanied by numerous photographs of the house and gardens as well as other sites of interest, including Salisbury Cathedral, Portsmouth, and Brighton.
